June theme series - Summer staples

June is my birthday month and to mark the month, I've decided to commit to weekly themed posts, which makes 5 since I intend to post them on Sundays.

To kick off this series, please take a look at my summer staples.

My makeup routine varies from day to day. It could be pure physical sunscreen with eyebrows one day or foundation, cream blusher and lip gloss with eyebrows over sunscreen the next day. Due to the great difference, I've chosen to omit most makeup items in this post.

These are my haircare summer staples. I rotate them depending on the situation but most of them have been in play since last year.

Left to Right
Goldwell Nice Balance Calming Milk, purchased from Ebay UK years ago. This product was introduced on Lady First, the Taiwanese beauty/shopping show and I remember spending quite a bit of effort to track down and buy the products used in that episode. I have the L'Oreal Professionel Techniart product from that episode too (somewhere).
Toni & Guy Cleanse Dry Shampoo. Quite frankly, I bought this when it was cheap. It's a typical dry shampoo spray.
Legitime Scalp Air Tonic. This Korean hair product was purchased after I used and liked their scalp shampoo. The interesting thing about this tonic is the blunt bristles at the top similar to scalp scrubbers. The product comes out of a central nozzle and you can instantly give your scalp a massage instead of rubbing product in with fingers.
Lucido Oil Control Tonic. This was introduced on Lady First either in a summer episode of 2012 or 2013. It's a cooling spray for the scalp and alcohol is high on the ingredient list. This and the Legitime are my favourite for oily roots and scalp.
(Top) Kracie Ichikami Hair Treatment Essence. I remember purchasing this years ago due to rave reviews and the supposedly sakura scent. I found reviews of this dating from 2010/2011 and this actual product has been discontinued, so my best guess is this bottle is at least 3 years old. Due to the size (100ml), I've only found that it's running low recently. I typically use it at least once a week to tame frizz on damp hair as a leave-in conditioner.
(Bottom) Utena Matomage Hair Styling Stick. Yet another product introduced by Lady First. This one was far more tricky to identify and buy than the others as it was introduced on the show as a Japanese product not available for sale in Taiwan at that time. The usual bloggers/forums who could usually identify products featured on Lady First were stumped as the presenters were very careful not to show the product name (their usual practise). Without the product name, it was simply a bright green container that the hairdresser was smearing over the celebrity's hair. This product tames my flyaway hairs very well especially when I pull my hair back in a ponytail/chignon.

Left to Right
Coppertone Water Babies Pure & Simple SPF50 is my current go-to daily pure physical sunscreen. This was purchased from USA and not available in Singapore.
Happy Bath Aqua Cooling Gel purchased from Korea. Happy Bath is actually a bodycare brand under the Amore Pacific group (Sulwhasoo, Laneige etc). I usually apply it immediately after a shower and it gives me a slight cooling feeling without stickiness.
(Top) Aqurea Moisturising Cream. This is basically a 10% urea cream and it's my fail-safe moisturing cream for body (I find the texture a tad too heavy for my face). It's unscented and I find that it calms skin down immediately (I've used it on children who had insect bites/irritated angry skin). I try to keep a tube in my bag so I can use it wherever I go to moisturise my hands after washing with hand soap or splashing my arms with water to keep them cool.
(Bottom) Daiso Everbilena Eyebrow coat. Purchased at Daiso at the price of S$2 for 6ml of product, this works very well.  It comes in a nail-polish/Benefit tint container and one uses the product by dabbing it on with the brush after you've used eyebrow powder/pencil. I personally find this to seal the eyebrow colour really well, yet it is easily removed by normal makeup removers (no special lip & eye makeup removers required).
(Top) Neutrogena makeup remover cleansing towelettes, not available for sale in Singapore. I carry this around when I have a long day out and at some point, I might want to redo/remove my makeup. It's gentle on the skin and I do prefer it over Watsons house brand makeup remover wipes or unscented baby wipes inspite of the difficulty in getting it and the price.
(Bottom) Gatsby Facial Paper . I don't tend to use this on my face often as the second ingredient on the ingredient list is alcohol. However, it is great when your face is an oil slick and your neck is sticky from being outside for a long time. The piece shown here is my backup pack, I carry around half a pack in my bag daily.

Technically, Singapore doesn't have a summer season but late May-July usually sees very high temperatures and humidity. One day it can be scorching hot and the next it could be raining cats and dogs. Most people try to escape indoors as much as possible and this is tricky as it means entering air-conditioned spaces from a typically hot/humid exterior. I use the above products in rotation whenever I see the need, typically on hot and wet days.

Tangs and Takashimaya

I'm no stranger to online shopping (hears scoffing in the background). In fact, I love online shopping, especially in the hours that I can't sleep. However, I've been conditional online shopping recently. Instead of buying makeup from the US and having them shipped over, I've been looking at buying them locally where possible. I still shop online for the brands or products which are not here yet.

One reason is that I've realised that online shopping is not as cheap as it looks, even when I shop during sale times. The international shipping charged by consolidators can be high if you're only getting a few items. And there's the wait.

Another is that more beauty brands have established themselves in Singapore, taking the distance out of overseas brands. We still don't get the full collection (for example no eyeshadow palette from MAC's All About Orange collection) nor all the shades (for example Revlon's ColorStay Foundation) but things have been improving.

I love to wander around the beauty halls of departmental stores but I spend much more time at these two compared to the rest.
MAC All About Orange collection launched in Singapore before US/UK

Tangs (I go to the Tangs Orchard store) stocks Aveda, Sulwhasoo, NARS, Giorgio Armani, Burberry Beauty just to name a few brands. Tangs holds members' closed door sales a few times every year where they give a whopping 12% rebate off your purchase. In their recent members' sale, they were also giving away a $25 beauty voucher with a minimum spend of $250.

NARS GWP offer at the Tangs members' closed door sale

Other than the usual departmental suspects (Bobbi Brown, Chanel, Dior, Lancome, etc), Takashimaya stocks several Japanese brands. Think Albion, Lunasol, Kanebo, Cosme Decorte AQMW and Kose. There's also the Watsons flagship store, Aveda/The Body Shop/Kiehl's/MAC stores within Ngee Ann City which is a 2 mins walk away from the Takashimaya departmental store.

Lunasol GWP offer at the Takashimaya sale

I wasn't able to make it down when Tangs did their members' closed door sale earlier this month but I made my way to Takashimaya on the first day of their sale (members enjoyed an additional 10% off all prices during the first 3 days of the sale).

Cosme Decorte GWP offer at the Takashimaya sale

It was then that I realised that although the beauty brands had published their GWPs offerings for the sale, the brands were having discounts/rebate vouchers alongside which was not stated in the brochure. One brand was offering a $15 voucher with every purchase of $100 and another was doing 20% off with a minimum spend of $500. And Takashimaya cardmembers got to enjoy an additional 10% off on top of these vouchers/discounts.

Considering that the 2 brands having the offers were brands not found at duty free stores in Singapore, it was an amazing deal! I was mighty tempted to stock up but stopped myself by insisting that I shop my stash before I get any pricey products.

It's easy to support the local retail economy when stores like these are getting really smart with their pricing and offerings!

Takashimaya Sale May 2013

Takashimaya's newsletter on their sale in Mary 2013 should have reached all their cardmembers by now.

The sale starts from Fri 24 May to Sun 16 Jun 2013 but there is a Takashimaya Cardholders' special for the first 3 days where cardholders would receive an additional 10% off on top of the promotional prices or sets.

I've scanned the entire beauty newsletter, do drop me a note if you wish to see what beauty offers are available at Takashimaya.

I enjoy shopping at Takashimaya and will be there on Friday with my card at the ready!

MAC All About Orange

MAC's All About Orange is going to be launched in Singapore on 22 May. USA is expected to get it on 6 June and UK is also supposed to receive it in June. Singapore is getting it ahead of USA and UK!

Score one for Team Singapore!

After years of seeing collections and products come late to Singapore and Asia (or never coming at all), I'm heartened by this news. Not too sure if MAC will launch All about Orange in all the MAC counters/boutiques islandwide, but I do know that Tangs Singapore will have this collection on this date.

If the collection is only available at Tangs Singapore (at the start), it would mean that MAC views Tangs, possibly the doyenne of departmental retail in Singapore, as a worthy partner. MAC has often partnered with Nordstrom (USA) to launch MAC exclusives and *fingers crossed*, perhaps a similar collaboration is not far off in Singapore?

Sales in Singapore - May 2013

The departmental stores in Singapore are starting to kick off The Great Singapore Sale season.

Robinsons
15-17 May - Cardmembers' Preview of The Great Singapore Sale. The DM sent to cardmembers came with coupons for
a) $10 voucher with mini. purchase of $100
b) $30 voucher with mini purchase of $180
c) $50 voucher with mini purchase of $250

Isetan
17 May - Private cardmembers' sale.
Additional information can be found here.
Like the private sale in March, 10% of purchase amounts would be given in the form of vouchers for beauty purchases.

Update: Just found via facebook that Ettusais will be giving away luggage as GWP upon purchases of S$180 of ettusais products. The luggage looks lovely and is likely to go out in a dash!

Takashimaya
Quite frankly, I am waiting for the Takashimaya members sale (also known as Taka Day in late May, typically after Mother's Day). 2013 is Takashimaya's 20th year anniversary and I do believe they might go beyond the usual discounts.

Karl Lagerfeld in Singapore

Bonjour. I am delighted to be here in Singapore. *waves black lace fan to bring air to face*

I admit my handlers told me it would be warm, but I was not expecting the amount of heat. When I was in Beijing, China in 2007 for the Fendi Grand Wall of China show, the temperatures were so nice! Nonetheless, I will stick to wear black and white and boots in Singapore. My handlers have been instructed to bring me to as many air-conditioned places as possible where I can also drink my diet Coke in peace.

Singapore is truly an ideal country to showcase the latest 2013-2013 Chanel cruise collection.

Besides, I'm designing the emblem of Sofitel So Singapore and I'll like to take a look at this city.

(Takes a question from one journalist)

Where will I be going in Singapore?

Well, I love books and magazines, so a trip to Kinokuniya (after hours, of course) is in order. I have also heard good things about Books Actually but I do not know if I have time.

My entourage wants to visit Pangaea and I might go for a few minutes. Of course, Marina Bay Sands and Raffles Hotel are on the schedule too. We are showing Once Upon A Time at Raffles Hotel on 8 May.

You can go here to see the actual film if your editors don't allow you to come to the film screening (hands snow-white cards all around).

Other than that, I have no time. The fashion show takes up a lot of my time. I am not a tourist here, you understand. I am here to work.

(Takes a question from another journalist)

Will I be trying chicken rice?

Excusez moi, I am Karl Lagerfeld, not Anthony Bourdain. The Karl Lagerfeld diet is famous, non?

I will drink diet Coke, lots of it. The rest, my staff will prepare my food.

(PR handler smiles and indicates the conversation is over. The Kaiser is leaving the building.)

Disclaimer: I do not and have not worked for Chanel, Fendi nor its related companies. My only link with Karl Lagerfeld is in having a Karl Lagerfeld doll from the Sephora collection. I mean no disrespect by this blog post and the purest motives for Mr Karl Lagerfeld to enjoy himself in Singapore outside his work.

Pierre Hardy for Nars Summer 2013

Several beauty bloggers in USA and UK have blogged about designer Pierre Hardy creating a colour palette for Nars. The Pierre Hardy-Nars collection consists of 6 'nail polishes' (but actually it's 6 pairs of 2 nail polish colours, which makes it 12 colours but you can't purchase a half of the pair on its own) and 2 blushers. This collection is launching in May (1 May in USA, uncertain exactly when in UK). I first read about it here.

Pierre Hardy for Nars Nail Polish Pair in Sharks

I have my eye on the following nail designs once my splitting nails problem lessen. Wouldn't they look even more gorgeous in Sharks colours?

At this point, it seems uncertain if Singapore would get this collection. Singapore did get the Andy Warhol collection as Nars entered Singapore late 2012 and it was a perfect opportunity for the brand to showcase their offerings. However, when I popped by the Nars counter on 4th April 2013, the Andy Warhol collection was no longer stocked (but apparently still available for sale online in USA).

Her World Plus has also sent out a tweet on this collection but as their source is AFP, they've just mentioned the launch date of 1 May (which I believe is the USA date and not the confirmed date of launch in Singapore).

As beauty journalists, can you confirm 1 May is the exact date of release is in Singapore before informing your readers? We rarely get makeup released at the same time as those in USA or UK so if Nars Singapore has a worldwide release date, that'll be something to talk about. Come on, people!

Update on 30 April 2013
The Straits Times Urban supplement has published that the Pierre Hardy for Nars collection will be available exclusively at the On Peddar Scotts Square outlet on 25 and 26 May (2-6 pm). The makeup will be available at Tangs from 1 June. Nail polishes will be retailing at S$43 and blushers are going for S$65.

Sulwhasoo Snowise EX

I booked the MIL for a Sulwhasoo Snowise EX facial for her to try their products during a recent Sulwhasoo Snowise EX event at Tangs VivoCity. She had been complaining that her SKII creams did not lighten her freckles and was keen to try others.

The facial cost S$180 but fully redeemable for any Sulwhasoo products, hence the facial would be effectively complimentary if one selected sufficient sulwhasoo products. The event was held at the atrium area of VivoCity in a specially built up area with capsule salons.

Sulwhasoo Snowise EX range

According to the MIL, the lady who attended to her during the facial was a South Korean, specially flown in for the week-long event. An aunt accompanied the MIL during the facial and was taken care of by a Singaporean sales associate.

The feedback from the two ladies (average age 61 years old) was that the facial itself was very relaxing, with incense sticks being burnt during the facial. One felt that the therapist's hands were too warm whereas the other felt that there wasn't enough pressure applied during the facial. When I asked if they gave the feedback on the spot so the therapists could adjust, they both replied in the negative. Can't please everyone if you don't indicate your preferences!

This being a mall event, there were no special salon equipment. However, a direct-mailer I received in the past indicated that they ran the same event at The Loft, SEVIN at Tangs (a dedicated salon area) and facials there would probably have the full range of equipment.

Ingredient list and instruction for Sulwhasoo Snowise EX cleansing foam

The ladies ended up buying the same Sulwhasoo Snowise products to redeem their $180. They bought the Snowise EX Whitening masks (S$162 for 10 sheets) and the Snowise EX cleansing foam (S$50 for 150ml). The sales associate was very kind and gave them additional pieces of the whitening masks and samples of the whitening serum. The MIL was very impressed with the cleansing foam, she was gushing about how much fairer it made her hand when the therapist tried it on one hand.

The MIL passed a few pieces of the whitening masks to try and I will post my review on them once I get the chance!

Qing Ming Jie 清明节

Officially, Qing Ming Jie (清明节 in simplified Mandarin) indicates one day much like Chinese New Year refers to the first day of the new year. But like with all traditions, it has evolved with time such that it is now acceptable to carry out the necessary rites anytime during 2 weeks before and after the actual day, thus making it a month-long event.

The actual Qing Ming Jie fell on 4 April this year but families with working adults typically do it on the weekends and my family was no different. The necessary was done today (Sat, 6 April). Due to land  being a scarcity in Singapore, few families have actual ancestors buried in the ground and with tombs (one of the oldest cemeteries in Singapore, Bukit Brown is currently facing a grave exhumtion exercise to make space for a new road).

During Qing Ming Jie, it is customary to burn paper offerings to the ancestors and those who have moved on. There are typical run-of-the-mill stuff which almost everyone gets e.g. nondescript clothes, shoes etc.

And then there are others. Like an SK-III skincare set.

Recap of sales in Singapore - March 2013

I haven't been paying close attention to the shopping seasons in Singapore, but sorting my mail and throwing old mail, I realised March is actually a good month for beauty shopping in Singapore!

Tangs
14-15 March - 12% rebate for Tangs cardmembers and Citibank credit & debit cardmembers as part of Spring 2013 campaign. They were also having special beauty deals/sets/GWP/PWPs and giving away a $25 beauty voucher with a minimum spend of $250.

Takashimaya
14-20 March - a mini beauty fair. I threw the flyer away but am certain of Lancome's promotion (because I went to the Lancome counter).

Purchase at least $200 and receive a 6-piece gift set (worth $177). Top up to a minimum buy of $280 and get an additional lipstick or eyeshadow set. The eyeshadow the sales associate showed me was the Tresor Hypnose Ombre Monos which were released for Christmas 2012. The lipstick set was 3 individual lipsticks, full-sized.

Top up your purchase to $320 and get a $30 voucher on top of the gift set and lipstick/eyeshadow set. It was very tempting, if I wanted to get Lancome products.

*Bi-annual Takashimaya Baby Fair was from 6-24 March 2013.

Isetan
28 March - Private members' sale. 10% of purchase amount given in the form of vouchers for beauty purchases. Each time, the Isetan private members' sale has been jam-packed. I remember going once with a colleague a few years ago and it was simply insane!

OG
20 March - Cardmembers sale of 20% storewide. At OG Orchard Point, they were offering 20%+10% off.

This was the queue outside Orchard Point 30 mins after the store had opened. One line was simply not moving at all!

Watsons
27 March - Members only closed door sale. Makeup/skincare brands were going up to 25%+5% off. 25+5% off brands: Boujois, BYS, Canmake, KATE, L'Oreal makeup, Majolica Majorica, Maybelline, Pupa, Revlon, Sally Hansen, Silky Girl, Star Lash, ZA, Bio-essence, Ginerva, Formula 10.0.6, Skin79.
